David Lucas' 911s Targa

Hi there,

I recently fell onto your site and was very impressed with it's look and the photos of many vintage Porsches. The early cars are definitely my passion. They represent the cars I fell in love with in my youth screaming around Mid Ohio Raceway. As long as I live I will hear the distinctive note of an early S downshifting into turns 8,9,10.

Three years ago I got wind of an early S Targa for sale here in Florida. After speaking to the owner and getting the numbers from him, I quickly looked up the vin and realized that this car, ( according to my research ) is one of 720 built for the world and one of 125 or so that made it into the U.S.A.! Now I could be wrong but that is what I have been able to come up with, If anyone out there has any info I sure would be obliged. Needless to say, I bought it. She is pretty much all original with only 62K miles in her rear view mirror. Absolutely NO RUST ANYWHERE!!

I am the 4th owner, the first is rather suspicious as it was titled new, to a company, in Florida, and then it showed up in Chicago 2 wks. later and 1600 miles, for sale.....I suspect it was used to run some dope then dumped in Chicago! And in those days it would have been the right car for the job, FAST, VERY FAST! The next two owners were father and son. Father, then sold to son, PCA members who I have talked to and gotten some interesting stories from. It was to Parade twice on the west coast, and was clocked at 155 mph at Laguna .... or so I have been told. They were pleasantly surprised to hear that it was still around and looking good. After pop and son, It was sold to a doctor who brought it back to Fla. and drove it 10K in 10 years. He also "updated " it by installing a whale tail and late license panel. HE THEN THREW THE OLD LID AND PANEL AWAY!!!!!! Yep the aluminum one!! I have replaced it with a steel lid, just to get the original look back. I'm still looking for the aluminum one. Everything else is as original. Recent gearbox rebuild and other replacement of worn original parts was necessary. Sorry if I'm rambling but it truly is a fine car, and I hope worthy of your gallery.

Best regards,

David Lucas
